Commonly used Building construction types

There are different types of construction which are used for constructing building, homes, sheds, and such. When it comes to designing a structure, the construction type is chosen based upon a number of things such as Purpose of the structure, Size of the structure, Load bearing constraints, Environmental factors, Cost of materials and Speed of construction.

Here are the most commonly used building construction types-

1. Pre-engineered Construction

Pre-engineeredbuildings (PEB) are those building in which excess steel is avoided by tapering the sections. They are mostly constructed in a quicker way as compared to any other construction type. The key advantage of Pre-engineered buildings is low installation time. All the parts are ready to be bolted and screwed together.

Fast construction, Engineered to handle all the loads, Easy to design and manufacture are some major advantages of pre-engineered buildings which make them different from others.

2.  Steel frame Construction

Steel frame construction is used primarily in large span steel structures. These specialised steel structures are built from steel column and steel trusses to support floors and roofs. Large span steelstructures and High rise buildings are commonly built using this method, as it’s easy to transport materials up using cranes and the components are quickly bolted or welded together.

Steel is flexible, due to which it helps in earthquake prone areas or in areas of high wind. Steel can flex quite a bit without taking on permanent deformation, making it a great material for constructing tall buildings, steel bridges etc.

3. Concrete Frame construction

Concrete frame construction uses reinforced concrete columns, concrete beams, and concrete slabs to built the support structure. This construction type is often used in high-rise buildings and elevated roadways.

In building construction most all components are casted on site, thus construction time is not fast due to the curing time of the components. Concrete frame construction does not hold well to earthquakes, although it does weather wind effect and weather well, over time.

Features of Structural Steel Construction

Steel has been used for constructing large span steel structures all over the world. With the introduction of standard sections, large span steel structures are getting much more popular as a choice of construction for high-rise buildings and heavy structures. Strong, Versatility, economy and plentiful are some favorable properties of steel that makes it one of the most efficient materials for use in large span steel structures.

The availability of steel sections in a variety of dimensional ranges provides the designers with a wide variety of design options. These sections are manufactured in convenient shapes, sizes and thickness. They can be readily fabricated, combined and connected to form unlimited possibility of designs.

Features of Structural Steel Construction:-

·       Structural characteristics

1) Steel frame can easily have the layout changed to suit new design than concrete, especially requiring alteration after completion of the structures.
2) Steel has lower dead load (unless encased in concrete)
3) Steel has higher thermal expansion value
4) Steel sections in various convenient type and size thus economical in design and uses – refer to standard steel sections.

·       Construction aspects

1) Quicker to erect and can be prepared offsite – in factory environment with good production and quality control.
2) Longer and highly coordinated planning – requires lesser time to make structural design, fabrication and delivery.
3) High requirement in the control of dimensional accuracy before and during construction (in fabrication and in erection).
4) Complex quality assurance procedures – especially in the control of welding connections.

Challenges in Pet-coke Storage

Petcoke is a bye product / undesirable product of oil refining cracking process. Petcoke is often used because of its high-calorific value as well as lower handling cost per unit of Heat Content.

In comparison to coal, petcoke is categorized as a material with low volatile,  lower ash content, high fixed carbon content and high sulphur content. It is also used as a complementary fuel in cement industries.

Challenges in Petcoke Storage:-

·    During Petcoke storage, temperature of the exhaust gas increases if petcoke is introduced with raw material resulting into increased gas volume and increased specific heat consumption. In that situation, the benefits should be worked out considering reduction in Kiln production and increased fuel consumption.

·     Petcoke has some toxic contents like vanadium, nickel etc, which go along with dust. Hence, plants which dispose the return dust have to ensure that the concentration of these compounds do not exceed the limits defined by the environmental laws.

·  Due to the establishment of large outdoor petcoke storage, many concerns about possible public health consequences by petcoke emission have been raised. Moreover during its bulk storage, many problems like spontaneous combustion, fugitive emission etc can occur at any stage of transportation, storage and handling.

These are some major challenges which are faced during the storage of petcoke. Petcoke storage sheds are the ultimate solution of these problems. These sheds are designed in such a way that these problems of spontaneous combustion, fugitive emission can be controlled without any loss to the stockpiles quality.

About Hindustan Alcox Limited

Over past three decades, Hindustan Alcox limited the well versed and proficient organization emerged as India’s apex coal storage shed manufacturer holds a tremendous experience in producing petcoke storage shed. Depending on different factors like geology, demographics climate etc they provide the best petcoke storage shed.

Role of Gypsum storage in FGD/Flue gas desulphurization unit

Gypsum is a mineral found in sedimentary rock formations in a crystalline form known as calcium sulphate dehydrate CuSo4.2H2O. Gypsum Storage at large scale is needed since it is one of the prime raw material in the cement industry and in power plants for FGD plants. In purpose to improve cement’s inherit qualities, performance and efficiency, a composite gypsum storage solution need to be followed systematically:

Gypsum Handling

Gypsum handling includes bunkering of gypsum, along with its stacking and reclaiming in a very cautious way. A gypsum handling system adds flexibility and automation to a processing facility helping to ensure that gypsum moves efficiently from one stop to the next and even to a storage and transport. As an aggregate, gypsum can be a difficult material to handle, requiring a system that is robust and able to with stand a rigorous workload. Gypsum is usually stored under well constructed sheds ensuring its storage without deterioration and without exposure  to moisture and heat, and away from the direct sun.

For environmentally friendly gypsum storage and production of a best outcome in cement industry, today almost all out-performing cement plants use to store gypsum stockpiles under a strong, durable, eco-friendly and solution-rich gypsum storage sheds and gypsum storage.

Role of gypsum storage system in FGD/ Flue gas desulphurization Unit:

The resources like coal, petcoke contain a significant amount of sulphur into them. In many large scale power plants and cement plant (where the raw material is Coal, petcoke etc), the problems arises from boiler or furnace where large volumes of So2 accumulation not only deteriorates air quality of environment but also highly corrosive for handling equipments like stackers, fans etc.
In order to extract So2 from flue gas, the mechanism of extraction employed is known as FGD or Flue Gas Desulphurization. In Flue Gas Desulphurization, the chemical Techniques are used to exclude sulphur di-oxide (So2) in exhausted flue gasses from the Furnace/boiler. Some of the Chemical techniques used for FGD are ‘Wet Scrubing’, ‘Dry Scrubing’, ‘SNOX FGD’ etc.
The output from flue gas desulphurization is synthetic gypsum, which is carried out under FGDSHEDS. For cement manufacturing, this FGD storage product or synthetic gypsum is supplied in crushed form for further fine grinding with cement clinker and has many other commercial applications in cement industry, bricks manufacturing etc.

Gasification of Coal

Gasification of coal is a high temperature process which is developed to produce a fuel gas with minimal of liquid and solids. Coal Gasification take place in a gasifier, generally in a high temperature vessel where oxygen and steam directly contracted with the coal causing a series of chemical reactions to occur that convert the feed to syngas and ash. Syngas is composed primarily of the colourless highly flammable gases carbon monoxide (CO) and Hydrogen (H2).  Coal Gasification is considered as a partial oxidation process.

Applications of Coal Gasification:-

¨ One of the most abundant energy sources
¨ Can be used to produce ultra-clean fuel
¨ Leading source of electricity today
¨ Chemical Production (Methanol, ammonia, acetic acid etc)
¨ Hydrogen made from coal or other solid fuels can be used to refine oil, or to make products such as ammonia and fertilizer (urea).
¨ By product of burning (ash or slag) can be used for concrete and roadways

Gasification is attractive for its simple but brutal operation. Higher efficiency, cleaner output and more control over products can only help the economics. As other sensor technologies are introduced gasification could be a leading refining technique for a wide range of raw materials from trash to cultivated biomass and on to coal. Gasification might not be elegant – but the process enjoys the leading spot for going to commercial scale in today’s market for synthetic fuel process. Particularly in clean generation of electricity from coal, gasification may make an increasingly important part of the world’s energy and industrial markets.

Dome Structure – Why are domes important in construction industry?

A dome is an element of architecture that resembles the hollow upper half of a sphere. Dome is a rounded vault mode of either curved segments or a shell of revolution, meaning an arch rotated around its central vertical axis. Dome structures made of various materials and has an architectural lineage extending into prehistory.

Importance of Dome structure in construction industry:

  • High Strength: Dome structures are highly durable and strong. If we talk about stability and average building life of dome structures, their life is longer and stability is more than any other type of structure in steel structure industry.
  • Very Low Maintenance: Dome structures are comparatively easier to maintain than any other building primarily due to the curved geometry, therefore the cost of maintenance on these structure is lesser.
  • Resistant to adverse weather condition: Due to its hemispherical Structure and absence of angles, flat surfaces makes them highly resistant to adverse weather condition such as Earthquakes, cyclones etc.
  • Extremely Energy Efficient: Bulk Storage dome structure does not need any interior support and thereby wide space inside them cater them the benefit of more storage. Moreover, there is substantial reduction in the weight of material that Is utilized leading to lower carbon footprint.
  • Good Acoustic Quality: In Most of the places where sounds need to travel in continuous manner, dome structures are more preferable as compared to other structures due to good acoustic nature.

Due to these great benefits, dome structures are highly preferable in the construction industry.
