Difference between Plain frame and Space frame

Plain frame are two-dimensional structure constructed with straight elements connected together by rigid and/or hinged connections. Frames are subjected to loads and reactions that lie in the plane of the structure.

Space Frame is a (3D) rigid, lightweight truss like structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space Frame can be used to span large areas with few interior supports.

Space frame

Elements in a planar structure are characterized by their distinctive ranks, not only by the size of their cross-sections but also by the importance of the task assigned to them.

In Space structure there is no sequence of load transfer and all elements contribute to the task of resisting the roof load in accordance with the 3D geometry of the structure.

In Plain Frames, Forces are act only along the axis of the members are having tension of compression.

In Space Frame, The Forces are acting along the axis of the member, in addition to transverse forces.

Each Member is acted upon by two equal and opposite forces having line of action along the centre of member’s i.e.  Every member of it is two force members.

One or more than one member of frame is subjected to more than two forces( Multiple Force Members )

Plain frames are more simple to calculate,  more weight effective

Space Frame are manufactured with very high precision to place in tight layout
